Templum Exhibition - Statement
We live in a world full of symbols. I am interested in the development of the symbol as iconic shorthand for myth, ideal, or transformative process. The human ability to create or “discover” meaning is something that has fascinated me since childhood. From the fairy tales of my youth to the myths and symbols of my adult pursuits, I have studied and observed the path of symbols in the world. As an artist, I seek to discover how an idea evolves into a symbolic object and how that object may come to be perceived by the believer or the non-believer as either transformative symbol or as cynical prop. This transitional space informs my work as I create objects that acknowledge the opposing viewpoints of belief and doubt, of symbol and artifice.

Kingdom Exhibition - Artist's Statement
The idea of sanctuary is something that has always intrigued me. The ability to operate from a place of safety and security is the foundation of a successful navigation of the world. But where is this sanctuary? Where is the place where we can labor and strive in peace, free from the prying eyes and insistent influence of the world? For me this place of sanctuary has always been found inside. My inner life is filled with the record of my struggles and triumphs and the personal symbols that have come to represent them. This landscape undulates and erupts with the myriad forms that narrate and describe the elusive country of the mind. Mountains of utopian peace, islands of doubt, and ever-changing archipelagoes of inquiry form the strange and wonderful map of this place in high relief. To attempt to describe the ongoing revelation of a series of personal mysteries is no easy task, I dare say it is impossible. These works speak to that impossible task and, with tongue-in-cheek; boldly go forth to shine an inquiring light on a world I can only begin to describe.
